What goes into a set, and how to pick fabric, fit and styling for work, festivals and weddings.

A Chikankari kurta set takes the guesswork out of dressing: the kurta, the bottoms and — where included — the dupatta are designed to go together, in coordinated fabric and embroidery. It is the easiest way to look put-together for an occasion without assembling pieces yourself.
Start by matching the set to the occasion. For daily and office wear, a lightly embroidered cotton or mulmul set in white or a soft tone is comfortable and understated. For festivals and family events, choose denser embroidery and a dupatta you can drape. For weddings and big celebrations, look to georgette, chanderi or heavily worked pieces, often with a flowing anarkali or nayra silhouette.
Fabric decides both comfort and formality. Cotton and mulmul breathe and suit the day; rayon drapes softly; chanderi and georgette feel dressier and catch the light. Confirm the exact fabric of both the kurta and the bottoms on the product page, and check whether the dupatta is included and how it is finished at the edges.
Fit is worth getting right across all the pieces. Go by the garment measurements rather than the size letter, and remember that bottoms vary — straight pants, cigarette pants, palazzos and shararas all change the look. A-line and nayra-cut kurtas are the most forgiving; straight cuts are the most minimal.
For styling, let the set do most of the work and add only a little: jhumkas, a few bangles and juttis are usually enough. If the set includes a plain dupatta, you can swap in a contrast one to change the whole mood for a different event.
Care for a set as you would any fine Chikankari — wash cold or dry clean the more delicate fabrics, dry in shade, and store folded in muslin. Bought well, one good kurta set will be the thing you reach for every festive season.
