A simple guide to choosing hand-embroidered Chikankari for mehndi, pujas, receptions and festival days.

Chikankari has quietly become a favourite for wedding and festive dressing — it reads as elegant and heritage-rich rather than heavy or over-the-top, and it photographs beautifully in daylight. The trick is matching the piece to the event, so here is a simple way to think about it.
For daytime functions — mehndi, haldi, a morning puja — lean into light, joyful dressing: a cotton or mulmul kurta set or a pastel Anarkali, with the embroidery doing the decoration. These events are long and often outdoors, so breathable fabric matters as much as the look.
For evening receptions and sangeets, move to georgette or chiffon, richer colours — plum, wine, teal, black — and a flowing Anarkali or a worked kurta set with a dupatta you can drape. The contrast of pale thread on a deep base is what makes Chikankari feel dressy without shouting.
For festival days — Diwali, Eid, Karwa Chauth, Navratri — a kurta set or Anarkali in a festive colour is both comfortable and celebratory, and because Chikankari is understated you can wear the same piece to several events with different jewellery and dupattas.
A few practical notes: order early, as the best festive pieces sell through; go by garment measurements for fit and allow time for any alterations; and build around one or two versatile sets rather than a new outfit per event. A neutral base plus a few contrast dupattas can carry you through a whole season.
Finally, protect your festive pieces. Dry-clean the delicate georgette and chiffon, store folded in muslin away from perfume and deodorant sprays, and air the garment before putting it away. Treated well, a good Chikankari festive piece becomes something you return to year after year.
