Why black Chikankari has quietly become a modern staple — and how to choose and wear it.

For most of its history Chikankari lived on white and pastel fabric. In the last few years, black has become one of the most asked-for colours — and it is easy to see why. White thread-work on a black base turns the embroidery into the hero: the contrast makes every motif crisp and graphic, and black flatters almost everyone while reading as effortlessly modern.
A black Chikankari kurti is also one of the easiest pieces to wear. It dresses down over jeans for the office or a dinner, and dresses up with a dupatta and statement jewellery for an evening event. Because black is a neutral, it pairs with gold, oxidised silver, maroon, teal and mustard accessories equally well.
When buying, look first at the embroidery density and placement. A yoke-focused design with scattered booti (small motifs) down the body is versatile and everyday; a heavily worked panel is dressier. Check that the white thread is clean and evenly worked against the black, since any irregularity shows more on a dark base.
Fabric drives both comfort and drape. Lightweight cottons and rayons are breathable and fluid for daily wear; georgette and chanderi feel more festive. Confirm the exact fabric before buying — a good product page will state it — and check the length and whether pockets and a lining are included.
For fit, go by the garment measurements rather than the size letter. Straight-cut kurtis suit a clean, minimal look; A-line and nayra-cut shapes are more forgiving and flow more. If you are between sizes, size up for an easy drape.
Styling is simple: black kurti + white or black bottoms + a single bold accessory. Add a contrast dupatta to take it to a celebration, or keep it monochrome with juttis for a sharp, understated look. Care is the same as any fine Chikankari — wash cold, dry in shade, store folded.
